Indonesian Independence March, 1945 , Yogyakarta
In arak-arakan, Kartono captures the fleeting, jubilant moment of freedom in a rendition of a street march he could have witnessed in Yogyakarta, by using swift strokes in pastel. In the marching line-up, a mass of uniformed men in the centre is seen to be flanked by ordinary, clad civilians in the back and front, suggesting the unity of countrymen at such a pivotal time. The heightened mood of the procession is further emphasised by waving flags and the luscious, bountiful tropical greenery in the background.
